Extend your Canadian study permit from inside Canada

A step-by-step walkthrough for international students in Canada who need to keep studying past their permit's expiry date, or who are changing schools, levels of study or permit conditions. You apply online in the IRCC secure account with the IMM 5709 form, ideally at least 30 days before your permit expires. Applying before it expires gives you maintained status, so you can keep studying under your current conditions while you wait.

Who it is for: Study permit holders who are in Canada and whose permit hasn't expired yet.

14 steps in order, a checklist of 18 documents, what to write in each form field and the mistakes IRCC warns about, each linked to the official page it comes from. Last checked against IRCC’s pages on November 3, 2026. General information, not legal advice.

The complete walkthrough is also published as a page that opens without JavaScript.
